Generic gifts are easy. Meaningful gifts take about 30 more seconds of thought. Here's how to close that gap.
Step 1: Think About What They Actually Say
Not what they post. Not what they tell their boss. What do they actually say, out loud, when they're comfortable? That's where the gift lives.
If they say 'I cannot deal with people today' on a regular basis — that's a mug. If they talk about being exhausted and committed and still showing up — that's a hat. If they have a person in their life who drives them insane — that's a card.
Step 2: Pick Something Specific
The more specific the better. 'Funny' isn't specific. 'Funny in a way that's also a little bit true and slightly uncomfortable' — that's Blunt.
Step 3: Don't Overthink The Occasion
The best gifts don't wait for birthdays. They arrive on a random Tuesday because you saw something and thought of someone. That's actually more meaningful than anything wrapped in a bow.
Step 4: Let The Gift Do The Talking
You don't need to explain it. The right gift explains itself. If you have to write a paragraph in the card explaining why the gift is funny, it's not the right gift.
